Description of Incident:

Broward Sheriff’s Office traffic homicide detectives are investigating a fatal crash involving a bicyclist and cargo van that occurred Friday night in Pompano Beach.

Broward Regional Communications received a 911 call at approximately 11:44 p.m. regarding a bicyclist struck by a vehicle. The incident occurred near the intersection of Southwest 12th Avenue and Southwest 8th Street.

The preliminary investigation revealed a 2006 Chevrolet Express van was traveling southbound on Southwest 12th Avenue (Andrews Avenue), approaching the 800 block. Traffic homicide detectives said for unknown reasons, the victim was riding his bicycle within the southbound right thru lane in the path of the van. The van struck the bicycle, pushing it into the center multi-directional left turn lane, where it came to final rest.

The driver remained at the scene. The bicyclist, an adult male, was transported to Broward Health North hospital, where he later was pronounced deceased.

Investigators said excessive speed and impairment are not deemed contributing factors to the cause of the crash. Also, there were no lights or reflectors on the bicycle.

The investigation continues.
