Description of Incident:
A Broward Sheriff’s Office deputy is alive today because of a ballistic vest after a suspect shot him during an investigation. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) will investigate the incident.

The incident began at the Seminole Hard Rock Casino within the Seminole Police Department’s jurisdiction, who requested assistance from BSO to help apprehend a strong-armed robbery suspect. BSO’s Burglary Apprehension Team (BAT) and Aviation Unit assisted in tracking the suspect through North Lauderdale and into the City of Margate.

The incident ended in a residential neighborhood, where deputies encountered the suspect, Carlos Robinson. Deputies issued commands for Robinson to exit the vehicle and attempted to deescalate the situation with less-lethal methods, but he failed to comply. Investigators say Robinson was armed and fired at deputies, striking a BSO North Lauderdale district deputy. The deputy’s ballistic vest absorbed the impact, preventing life-threatening injuries.

Law enforcement returned fire, striking Robinson. Margate Police Department’s SWAT team then moved in and he was detained. First responders immediately rendered medical aid. Both the North Lauderdale deputy and Robinson were transported to the hospital. The deputy was treated for his injuries and released. No other deputies or residents were injured.

Robinson faces multiple charges including attempted murder of a law enforcement officer, shooting into an occupied dwelling, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and resisting arrest with violence, as well as an active warrant out of Palm Beach County.

FDLE is investigating the circumstances of the deputy-involved shooting. BSO’s Homicide and Crime Scene units are investigating the circumstances that led to the shooting, and BSO’s Internal Affairs Unit is conducting an administrative review of the incident. The six deputies who fired their weapons are on administrative assignment pending the investigation.

Please contact the Seminole Police Department for additional details about the robbery which initiated the incident.
