Detectives with the Broward Sheriff’s Office Violent Crimes Unit have arrested Fred Vilbrun and Jamiel Willis in connection to a non-fatal triple shooting that occurred in Pompano Beach last December.
At approximately 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec 6., investigators responded to a shooting call near the 1700 block of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. When detectives arrived on the scene, the victim told investigators that several individuals had approached him as he was walking in the area. The victim also stated a verbal altercation took place during the encounter.
According to the victim, when he began to walk away, three of the unknown individuals lifted their waistbands and revealed their guns. That’s when the victim says he pulled out his gun and fired in self-defense as the subjects fired back.
Three people were shot during the ordeal: the victim, an innocent bystander shopping at the store, and another male subject later identified as Willis. Pompano Beach Fire Rescue transported the shopper to an area hospital for treatment. Detectives say the other male victim and Willis arrived at the hospital on their own. All three suffered injuries listed as not life-threatening.
Detectives released surveillance video of the incident to the public on Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2023.
Through investigative methods, investigators identified Willis and Vilbrun as two of the five individuals involved in the shooting. Warrants were obtained for their arrest thereafter.
On Friday, Jan. 19, Vilbrun was taken into custody by BSO’s V.I.P.E.R. (Violence Intervention Proactive Enforcement Response) Unit detectives near the exact location where the shooting took place in December. Willis was taken into custody on Monday, Jan. 29, by BSO V.I.P.E.R. Unit detectives in Deerfield Beach.
Vilbrun faces one count each of attempted murder, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and two counts of probation violation associated with narcotics.
Willis faces one count each of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.
The investigation continues.
