Paramedic Sherman Newberry began his fire rescue career on February 8, 1972 at the age of 22. He was one of the first five paramedics to be sworn and to serve with Broward County Emergency Medical Services. Newberry's career would well withstand the typical life span of the average paramedic over a period of 33 years of service. He truly had passion within his heart to deliver the best emergency medical care that he was trained to do. After all his years of service as a paramedic, on August 8, 2003, he was diagnosed with lung cancer. He gave his best fight ever and succumbed to the disease at the age of 53 on January 3, 2005. Paramedic Newberry is survived by his son Matthew.
