In 1989, the Broward Sheriff's Office entered into a contractual agreement with Tamarac to provide comprehensive law enforcement services. The jurisdictional boundaries for the district are in the central to western portion of Broward County bordered by the Sawgrass Expressway on the west, Southgate Boulevard on the north, Commercial Boulevard to the south and N.W. 15th Avenue to the east.
Incorporated in 1963, Tamarac covers approximately 12 square miles located in Central Broward County. Tamarac has a diverse population of 60,427 with a large segment of senior citizens. Tamarac boasts nine City Parks, one County Park, three golf courses, and over 300 acres of fresh water canals and lakes.
Tamarac is home to many residential and commercial areas including family and adult neighborhoods, condominiums, apartment complexes, Tamarac Elementary School, Challenger Elementary School, Millennium Middle School, University Hospital and the Tamarac Commerce Park.
The district has an annual operating budget of approximately $12.3 million and provides for 98 positions including a district captain, two lieutenants, eight sergeants, 70 deputies, 13 Community Service Aides and four support positions.
The members of BSO-Tamarac partner with other Tamarac City Departments to continually work towards fulfilling Tamarac's Strategic Plan, particularly STRATEGIC GOAL #5 - A VIBRANT COMMUNITY.
BSO's Citizen Observer Patrol, or COP Program, is a volunteer group sponsored by the Sheriff's Office that uses a simple approach to safeguarding neighborhoods through residents' involvement. COP volunteers are local residents who help BSO fight crime by patrolling their community in a BSO provided vehicle, looking out for suspicious activity or potential hazards and offering assistance to local residents. Typical assignments in addition to patrol activities include performing checks on unoccupied residences (at the owner's request), checking on elderly or homebound residents (as requested) and reporting potential problems and neighborhood hazards to BSO.
COP volunteers wear uniforms and drive specially marked vehicles, adding to the crime-fighting presence in the community. There are currently 11 COP posts throughout the City of Tamarac.
The COP program in Tamarac currently has approximately 570 registered members. Anyone wishing to join the BSO-Tamarac COP should contact Deputy Jennifer Marion at 954-720-2225.
