Description of Incident:
Catching up with the Rolex thief was only a matter of time. After the crystal clear video of the suspect stealing the watch hit the local and national media, tips began pouring into Broward Crime Stoppers.
Those tips only helped to confirm what Broward Sheriff’s Office detectives had already discovered.
After releasing the video from the TSA checkpoint on February 14, BSO detectives continued peering through hours of surveillance video from the airport. Finally, detectives spotted the suspect as he arrived at the terminal and, even though they couldn’t see what airline counter he checked in at, they were able to narrow down the options. They asked the airline to provide a list of people who checked in between the time of arrival and the time he was spotted going through the checkpoint and soon they had a headshot of their thief: Igor Ramos.
On January 18, Ramos had boarded a plane headed to New York. BSO detectives obtained an address for him in New York and worked with the U.S. Marshals Service check out the location. At the same time, BSO investigators worked other leads in the South Florida are. This morning (Friday, Feb. 17), the Marshals went to his home in Long Island, but he was not there. Shortly after, BSO detectives went to his condo in Sunny Isles. They heard voices inside the apartment and knocked on the door. Ramos answered the door wearing the prized Rolex watch on his wrist. Ramos was taken into custody without incident. Ramos travels between Florida and New York buying and selling cars and was getting ready to head back to New York when deputies knocked on his door.
Due to his heavy travel, it seems Ramos had no idea his face was plastered all over the U.S. showing him in the act of snatching the time piece.
The victim, Gloria de Regalado, was contacted and is very happy to hear BSO caught the suspect and retrieved her $6,500 watch.
Ramos will be booked into the BSO Main Jail facing one count of grand theft.
