Description of Incident:

Broward Sheriff’s Office investigators are releasing the name of a suspect who intended to rob a business in Pembroke Pines and harm anyone who got in his way. Upon entering, the suspect confronted BSO deputies, who felt forced to fire their weapons.

The fatal shooting occurred shortly after 3 p.m. at a business located at 1462 S. Palm Ave. in Pembroke Pines. Earlier in the week, BSO detectives learned from a confidential informant that Andrew Thomas, 23, was planning on robbing the business Thursday afternoon (July 18). When the masked gunman entered the business, he encountered BSO deputies and did not comply with their orders.

The deputies perceived a threat and responded with deadly force. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. No deputies were injured, and there were no employees inside the business during the shooting.

Per BSO policy, homicide detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Three deputies, Gerardo Lopez, 40, Carlos Gomez, 32, and Jason Rotella, 40, have been placed on administrative assignment pending the outcome of the investigation.

It is unknown why the suspect targeted this particular business.

The investigation continues.
