Description of Incident:
A man wanted by the Broward Sheriff's Office for brashly stealing valuables from women’s locker rooms at two area health clubs is finally behind bars.
Thirty-three year old Abdelmoumen Kraitiss is an illegal immigrant whose Moroccan visa expired in March of 1997. His Florida crime spree began in June of 2000 with a drug possession charge from Lauderhill police.
In 2001 alone, the man now known as the Locker Room Bandit has been charged with theft more than a half-dozen times, including March 9th in North Lauderdale, March 19th in Plantation, and April 1st in Ft. Lauderdale.
On April 8th, 2001, he was arrested by the Broward Sheriff's Office for stealing, using the alias Abdelmoume Kraitiss.
His arrests resumed April 10th when he was charged by Ft. Lauderdale police. That was followed by arrests on May 6th in Palm Beach County, May 12th in Ft. Lauderdale, August 2nd in Hollywood, and September 7th in Margate.
Broward Sheriff's Office District 12 detectives became involved after Kraitiss’ October 24th theft of valuables from a locker room at Gold’s Gym, at 1427 E. commercial Blvd. in Oakland Park.
Other thefts from health club locker rooms on November 16th and 24th helped earn Kraitiss the moniker, The Locker Room Bandit.
He’s been sitting in the Palm Beach County jail since November 29th after being arrested on theft and assault charges. His use of different aliases has helped him avoid capture and longer jail terms.
Kraitiss will likely be tried and sentenced in Florida before facing deportation to his native Morocco.
