- PIO Number: 01-9-27
- Date: Sept. 16 – 19, 2001
- Time: 10 a.m.
- Place of Occurrence: Atlantic Ocean, 2 miles off Pompano Beach
- Eric Alan Reichardt, 42, 3/7/59, 1007 Hawie St., Jupiter, FL (DECEASED)
Description of Incident:
Broward Sheriff's Office detectives, working with the Broward Medical Examiner, have been able to positively identify a diver’s body found floating in the ocean off Pompano Beach on Thursday.
The dead man is identified as Eric Alan Reichardt of Jupiter, Florida. The Medical Examiner performed an autopsy but has not yet determined the cause of death.
At about 10 a.m. Thursday, fishermen aboard a charter boat spotted Reichardt’s body floating about a mile and a half offshore. The Broward Sheriff's Office was contacted and a BSO Marine Patrol unit responded to the area and retrieved the body, which was partially dismembered, presumably by marine life. Articles of diving gear were attached to the remains.
Reichardt was a SCUBA enthusiast who disappeared Sunday afternoon (9/16/01) in that same general area while diving with three friends. After descending to a depth of 265 feet, using specialized equipment in what is termed a “technical dive”, Reichardt became separated from his friends while exploring a shipwreck. He was reported missing to the Coast Guard and several BSO Units, a BSO helicopter and other vessels searched for him until 9 p.m. Sunday.
