            Date:  October 1, 2011                                                        Time: 10:36 p.m.

            Jurisdiction: North Lauderdale

Place of Occurrence:   7250 W. McNab Road, North Lauderdale

 Victim(s):  female, age 29, Lauderhill

Suspect(s): Theodore Antonio Shirley, male, 19, 8/15/92 (IN CUSTODY)

  Description of Incident:

When Theodore Shirley kidnapped a 29-year-old woman in October, he didn’t count on an astute witness seeing him point a gun at the woman’s head. When that witness dialed 911, it took only moments for a Broward Sheriff’s Office deputy to pull alongside the victim’s Cadillac Brougham. Shirley was driving it, but the deputy could see the woman – her head, arms and wrists wrapped in duct tape – in the back seat.

When the deputy tried to stop the car, Shirley jumped out and ran, and the victim was able to get into the front seat to hit the brakes before the Cadillac hit a Taco Bell. The assailant left behind a loaded handgun, a beanie, gloves, duct tape - and his DNA. Detectives arrested him this week after BSO’s Crime Lab analysts determined that his DNA matched that left in the vehicle. He faces charges of kidnapping, carjacking with a firearm, burglary with assault or battery, armed burglary conveyance, attempted rape and grand theft of a firearm. The gun used in the kidnapping had been reported stolen in Lee County in 2010.

Shirley told detectives he had planned to rob and rape the victim after kidnapping her at 10:36 p.m. October 1 as she walked out of The Beauty Supply Store at 7250 W. McNab Road. He approached her as she walked to her car, pulled a handgun from his shorts and pointed it at her face. She screamed as he forced his way into her car. He used one hand to hold the gun against her head and the other hand to cover her mouth. He used his body to push her and pin her up against the driver’s seat and continued to terrorize her by putting the gun in her mouth in an attempt to keep her quiet. Then he wrapped duct tape around her head, nose, mouth, arms and wrists to immobilize her before forcing her into the back seat.

BSO Detectives later released a composite sketch of the assailant done by BSO Det. John McMahon that is remarkably similar to Shirley’s mug shot.

Media note: Shirley’s mug shot and the composite sketch are attached to this release.
