Description of Incident:

Broward Sheriff’s Office Homicide detectives released the name of the suspect who fled with his friend in a stolen car from Parkland Police early Tuesday morning.

The suspect who drowned was 29-year-old Jesus Acevedo of Miami. The other suspect, Serguey Placencia was arrested for grand theft auto and transported to BSO’s Main Jail. The incident occurred just after 1:00 a.m., when a BSO Dist. 8 (Weston) deputy, who was traveling south on I-75 spotted a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed with its lights off with a Parkland PD cruiser not far behind and the BSO helicopter overhead. When the deputy relayed the information to dispatch, he was informed that Parkland police were following the 1995 white Nissan from their city. The vehicle was stolen May 3, 2002, from Pembroke Pines.

The suspects exited I-75 at Griffin Road and proceeded north on Weston Road, where officers and deputies lost sight of them near South Post Road. A short time later the unoccupied Nissan Maxima was spotted in a nearby warehouse area. While searching for the suspects, Placencia appeared, yelling for deputies to help Acevedo who had disappeared in the lake.

Members from BSO’s dive team responded to the scene and recovered Acevedo’s body shortly after 4:00 a.m. near the 3200 block of Meridian Parkway in Weston.
