Description of Incident:

A 25-year-old man died early this morning after he tumbled out of a canoe and drowned in the lake behind his Deerfield Beach home.

The fatal mishap occurred shortly after 3 a.m. in the lake behind the victim’s apartment at 1020 Crystal Lake Drive. According to his companions, the victim, Jesus Franco, 25, spent Friday evening with three friends: one male and two female. The four were reportedly drinking and after returning to Franco’s home, they decided to go for a midnight canoe ride. Using a large canoe docked behind the apartment complex, the foursome had paddled some distance from shore when the boat capsized, sending everyone into the water. None of them had life vests. The women began screaming, prompting neighbors to dial 911. The two women and one man made it safely to shore, but Franco did not.

BSO deputies and Deerfield Fire Rescue personnel attempted to locate Franco but were unable to find him.

The BSO dive team recovered Franco’s body from the lake at about 10:15 a.m.

The Broward Medical Examiner will perform an autopsy to establish the official cause of death, believed to be accidental drowning.
