CHILD DROWNING DEATH

BSO Case Number: BS02-05-7530
PIO Number: 02-5-32
Date: May 16, 2002
Time: 1730
Place of Occurrence: 1025 W. Prospect Road, #1, uninc. Ft. Lauderdale

Victim(s):

  • Kelvin Arce, 1, 11/22/00, male, 1025 Prospect Rd., uninc. Ft. Laud. (DECEASED)

Suspect(s):

Description of Incident:

An 18-month-old boy was pronounced dead this evening, apparently the result of an accidental drowning outside his home near Fort Lauderdale.

The victim, Kelvin Arce, was at home with his mother (Marisol Arce), grandfather (Leonides Villalobos), and a five year old cousin. Each adult thought the other was watching Kelvin, who had been watching television. When the toddler’s father (Eusebio Arce) arrived home from work at 5:30 p.m., he inquired as to Kelvin’s whereabouts. That prompted a brief search, which ended when the youngster was found floating lifelessly in the swimming pool. He had apparently wandered outside through the back door of his home and entered the pool.

The grandfather jumped into the water and pulled Kelvin out while the father dialed 911. A neighbor and responding BSO deputies performed CPR until paramedics arrived and rushed him to Holy Cross Hospital, where he was declared dead at 6:35 p.m.

An autopsy will be performed by the Broward Medical Examiner to officially establish the cause of death, presumed to be accidental drowning.
