Description of Incident:
BSO detectives have recovered what is believed to be the last body part belonging to a young Pompano Beach woman who was dismembered and dumped in the New River near Fort Lauderdale last week.
A BSO Crime Scene detective found a left leg floating in the river at about 7 p.m. Wednesday. The discovery capped a second full day of scouring the waterway and surrounding area for body parts and clues.
At about 5 p.m. Tuesday (1/1/02), a passerby noticed a woman’s right leg floating in the river and called 911. BSO deputies responded to the scene and the limb, a woman’s right leg, was recovered. Investigators arranged for the BSO Dive Team to muster at Samuel Delevoe Park Wednesday morning to further check the waterway for additional body parts and evidence. As members of the dive team were arriving at the park at 10 a.m. two passersby observed a torso in the river and alerted the deputies.
The head and both arms were found in the river last Friday (12/28/01). All six body parts are now at the Broward Medical Examiner’s Office. They are presumed to belong to the victim, 22-year-old Marita White of Pompano Beach. The Medical Examiner is expected to conduct additional tests to officially link the parts. The cause of death remains undetermined.
BSO Homicide detectives are asking for help in determining Marita White’s most recent whereabouts and in identifying her associates. Anyone with any information is urged to call the Broward Sheriff's Office at (954) 765-4321. Information can be relayed anonymously through CrimeStoppers at (954) 493-TIPS and a reward is available.
