Description of Incident:
Following a five-month investigation, Broward Sheriff's Office detectives have charged two men with trafficking high-powered painkillers.
Undercover BSO detectives developed information that prescription drugs were being stolen from a Lauderhill United Parcel Service center while in transit to local Walgreen’s pharmacies. Working with UPS investigators, BSO detectives narrowed the suspects down to UPS employee Charles P. Cox of Davie. Detectives also learned that after stealing the drugs from the UPS center, Cox would sell them to a Hollywood man, 45-year old Robert J. Kennedy Jr.
Around lunchtime on February 12, 2003, detectives confronted Cox at his workplace. The 21-year old Cox confessed to stealing and delivering to Kennedy hundreds of tablets of the painkiller Oxycontin. At the same time Cox was being arrested, detectives working with Hollywood police, stopped Kennedy in that city for a traffic violation. Inside Kennedy’s vehicle, investigators found oxycodone and hydrocodone. Kennedy consented to a search of his home at 1840 Fillmore Street where, inside apartment number 5, detectives uncovered hundreds of prescription pain pills, cocaine, marijuana, and a semi-automatic handgun. Kennedy, too, confessed to trafficking in the drugs.
Both men are in the Broward Sheriff's Office Main Jail. Cox faces a single charge drug trafficking and has a half-million dollar bond. Kennedy is being held without bond on 18 separate drug charges.
