Description of Incident:

An early morning confrontation between two off-duty security guards and a man playing loud music ended in a fatal shooting.

Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the Whispering Palms Apartments at 4530 NW 36 Street in Lauderdale Lakes shortly past 3 a.m., following a report of a shooting. Upon arriving, deputies found the lifeless body of a man lying between two cars and the two security guards on scene.
Investigators determined the two security guards work at the Whispering Palms Apartments. One of them also lives there.

The co-workers were returning from a night out when they heard loud music coming from a dark-colored sedan parked in the parking lot. The two security guards approached the vehicle and one of them asked the music listener to lower the volume. The exchange escalated when the man stepped out of his vehicle and confronted one of the security guards. The victim reached in the direction of the guard’s gun. The second guard, who watched the entire scene unfold, feared for their safety and shot the victim. Both security guards remained at the scene waiting for deputies to arrive and have cooperated fully with investigators.

The security guards were armed and both have valid concealed weapons permits. A third security guard, who was on duty and witnessed the incident, provided a corroborating statement to investigators.

The body of the victim was transported to the Medical Examiner’s Office. The victim’s name is being withheld pending notification of the next of kin. The identities of the security guards are being withheld at this time due to security concerns.

The case will be presented to the State Attorney’s Office for review.
