Description of Incident:

The Broward Sheriff's Office is investigating the death of a man who apparently drowned while swimming in the Intracoastal Waterway in Pompano Beach.

The incident occurred at about 11 a.m. in the ICW behind Houston’s Restaurant at 2821 East Atlantic Boulevard. According to witnesses, the unidentified white male victim was sitting on the seawall and pushed himself off, entering the water feet first. He was seen swimming and then, a few minutes later, was observed floating face down.

A waiter at Houston’s dove into the waterway, swam to the man and brought him to a dock where citizens began performing CPR. Their efforts were futile, however, as arriving paramedics declared the victim deceased.

The victim is believed to be a homeless man and is currently unidentified. The cause of death, presumed to be drowning, will be officially established following an autopsy by the Broward Medical Examiner.
