Description of Incident:
A globetrotting con artist known to target Muslims has been arrested and BSO detectives are asking local victims to come forward.
For several months, members of the Broward Sheriff's Office Strategic Investigations Division investigated the activities of James Ivey, Jr., also known as Abdul Rahman Mealk. Born in Indiana, Ivey became a Muslim while in prison, learning to speak Arabic and becoming familiar with the holy Quran. Presenting a friendly and polite persona, Ivey has been traveling the country, preying upon Islamic communities. Ivey typically arrives in an area, attends a local mosque, immediately befriends fellow Muslims and asks them to cash checks or become involved in business ventures. After stealing as much as possible from his new friends, Ivey moves on to another community and mosque.
Ivey is currently wanted in Colorado, Michigan and Oregon on warrants charging him with Grand Theft, Fraud, Forgery, Sexual Misconduct and Violation of Parole.
BSO SID detectives believe that Ivey passed bad checks in the Broward County area and swindled local residents out of many thousands of dollars. Our investigators circulated intelligence information and enlisted the assistance of other local and federal agencies in an effort to nab Ivey. Through U.S. Customs and the INS, Ivey was arrested at Miami International Airport on Saturday (2/23/02) when he arrived on a flight from the Dominican Republic and is being held on the out-of-state warrants. BSO Detective Floyd Baker went to the airport to interview Ivey, but he was uncooperative. At this time, Det. Baker is inviting local Muslims – or anyone else – who was swindled by Ivey to contact him at 321-5061 or through CrimeStoppers at 493-TIPS.
