Broward County crime down again in BSO jurisdictions

Successfully bucking a national trend that shows crime increasing in many major metropolitan areas, crime in the first six months of 2002 is down significantly in Broward County and more cases have been cleared (resolved) in the areas patrolled by the Broward Sheriff's Office.,Sheriff Ken Jenne cited excellent work on the part of BSO deputies and detectives as well as resident involvement for the continuing reduction in crime.,"I am very proud of this exemplary work by the men and women of the Broward Sheriff's Office," said Sheriff Jenne. "The cooperation and dedication of the residents in our patrol districts has helped us immeasurably. This unique partnership has again succeeded in driving down crime.",Throughout BSO's jurisdiction, crimes involving serious and violent offenses dropped nearly 16% in the first six months of this year compared to 2001. Viewed against the last 5 years (1997 to 2002), the decrease is an impressive 50%*.,In BSO-patrolled areas, the number of forcible sex offenses declined 22%, thefts are down 16%, burglaries dropped 11% and robberies decreased by 18% . Aggravated assaults are down 19% and aggravated stalking dropped 60%.,Auto theft, which had been on the rise for years, began a decline in 2001 and the downward trend continues in 2002 with a 14% decrease.,Reductions were seen in other categories including kidnapping, embezzlement and battery. Manslaughter dropped 100% in the first half of 2002 with no new cases reported. The number of drug offenses declined 12%.,The only violent crime registering an increase was murder. From January through June 2002, 12 people were slain compared to 11 in the first six months of 2001.,One of BSO's newest patrol districts, the City of North Lauderdale which contracted with BSO for police services in 2001, saw the most impressive crime decreases: crimes involving serious and violent offenses have dropped 49%, burglaries are down 60%, larcenies have fallen 48% and auto theft has dropped 36%. North Lauderdale also experienced the largest increase in solving crimes, up an extraordinary 195%.,The Broward Sheriff's Office assists all municipal police departments and provides full law enforcement protection in the county's unincorporated areas and the cities of Pembroke Park, Dania Beach, Lauderdale Lakes, Tamarac, Southwest Ranches, Weston, Deerfield Beach, Pompano Beach, Oakland Park, Lauderdale-By-The-Sea and North Lauderdale.
