Description of Incident:
Broward Sheriff’s Office K-9units and robbery detectives took a wounded bank robbery suspect, on the run from the law, into custody today following the botched robbery of the People’s National Bank in Lauderdale Lakes.
At about 12:00 pm on Monday, February 04, 2002, a guard saw a stolen Dodge van pull into the bank’s parking lot at 2412 N. State Road 7 and noticed two figures in the van, both wearing ski masks. The guard ran from the foyer to the lobby of the bank and told customers and employees to “get down”, then ran back to the foyer, drew his revolver, and took up position behind a desk.
The masked robbers, both armed with handguns, walked into the foyer, saw the guard, and demanded that he give up his gun. Fearing for his own safety and the well-being of those inside the bank lobby, the guard opened fire, hitting at least one suspect in the hand.
Without firing their own guns, the suspects ran from the bank, leaving behind one gun and their getaway vehicle, and fled towards the nearby Glen Cove apartment complex.
BSO immediately set up a perimeter and began hunting for the bank robbers. After an exhaustive search lasting nearly 2-hours, investigators found an injured suspect cowering in a vacant apartment and took him into custody. That suspect was taken to an area hospital.
Broward Sheriff's Office detectives and the FBI are pursuing the second suspect.
No other injuries were reported injured during the attempted robbery.
