Description of Incident:

A Coconut Creek woman died Wednesday evening when her SUV was hit by a train on the CSX tracks in Pompano Beach.

Broward Sheriff’s Office traffic homicide detectives continue to investigate the fatal collision that occurred around 5:35 p.m. in the 800 block of West Sample Road. Harris was headed west on Sample Road in a 2011 Nissan SUV when she entered the railroad crossing before the lanes were clear. Detectives said she was unable to clear the tracks due to heavy rush hour traffic.

Witnesses said the control arms with flashing red lights began to lower as the southbound Amtrak train approached, and the SUV became trapped between the railroad crossing gates. The train slammed into the passenger side of the SUV that was stopped on the tracks. Pompano Beach Fire Rescue responded and pronounced Harris dead at the scene.
