INTRUDER ARRESTED IN FORT LAUDERDALE

BSO Case Number: BS02-02-5780
PIO Number: 02-2-23
Date: Feb. 13, 2002
Time: 10:22 am
Place of Occurrence: 1015 NW 24 Avenue, Fort Lauderdale

Victim(s):

  • Samuel Jones, 68, male, 1015 NW 24 Ave., Ft. Lauderdale

Suspect(s):

  • Michael Gibson, 38, 12/3/63, male, Ft. Lauderdale

Description of Incident:

Following a brief standoff with BSO deputies, a home invader was arrested today in Fort Lauderdale.

At about 10:20 a.m., Deputy Ed Ragauskas was on routine patrol when he was flagged down and told that there was an emergency at 1015 NW 24th Avenue. Bordering on BSO’s District 5, the house is actually in the city of Fort Lauderdale, but Dep. Ragauskas was already on-scene so he stopped at the residence to handle the problem, followed by other deputies.

Deputies determined that an intruder had approached the front door of the home and forced his way inside, past the homeowner, 68-year old Samuel Jones. The intruder, Michael Gibson, 38, told Jones “people were out to get him.” Deputies standing outside ordered Gibson to exit the house but he refused. After about a 20-minute standoff, with deputies ordering him out and Gibson refusing to budge, Gibson left the house peacefully and was taken into custody.

The suspect and the victim were both unharmed. There is no indication that Gibson actually had “people out to get him.”

Gibson was booked at the Broward County Jail on a charge of Burglary.
