Description of Incident:

Broward Sheriff’s Office homicide detectives are investigating a fatal shooting that took place in the parking lot of a popular Ft. Lauderdale restaurant Thursday night.

An off-duty Fort Lauderdale Police officer had exited Maguires Hill 16 at 535 N. Andrews Avenue in Fort Lauderdale, when he came upon an altercation between a couple near a car in the parking lot. BSO detectives are investigating the circumstances that led to an exchange of gun fire between the man and the officer, leaving the man dead and the officer wounded. The veteran officer was transported to a nearby hospital where he underwent surgery and is in critical condition but stable.

Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue pronounced the man dead at the scene.

More than 40 patrons remained inside the business while BSO crime scene and homicide detectives collected evidence from the parking lot.

FLPD requested the assistance of BSO conducting the investigation since one of their officers was involved in this fatal shooting.

The investigation is ongoing.
