BSO Case Number: DN03-01-1532
Victim(s): State of Florida, City of Dania Beach, Broward Sheriff’s Office
Description of Incident:
Broward Sheriff Ken Jenne today announced a $12,500 reward for information leading to the arrest of the person(s) who set fire to a new BSO substation and community center nearing completion in Dania Beach.
The building at 803 NW 1st Street sustained only minor smoke damage, but Sheriff Jenne has made catching the arsonist a priority for detectives assigned to the arson investigation.
The crime was discovered at 6:50 a.m. when the project foreman arrived, entered the structure and encountered smoke. BSO deputies and Dania Beach firefighters were summoned to the scene. The fire, which had been deliberately set using debris and a flammable liquid, burned itself out without seriously damaging the building.
For many years, the former six-unit apartment building had been a haven for drug dealers operating across from Modello Park. Through operation START and other initiatives, crime and drug dealing in the area has been curtailed and Modello Park has been cleaned up and renamed Charlie Will Thomas Park. Dania Beach officials, wanting to reinforce BSO’s presence in the area, worked with Sheriff Jenne to convert the old crack den into a community center and substation to be frequented by District II deputies.
Speaking at a news conference today, Sheriff Jenne said that we will not be deterred from our plans to open the substation and that he wants the arsonist arrested. A $10,000 CrimeStoppers reward and a $2,500 State Fire Marshal’s reward are being offered for information leading to the suspect. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS.
