MAN CHARGED IN MOM’S NEGLECT DEATH

BSO Case Number: LL02-12-0817

Victim(s): Eleen Brown, 73, 11/2/29, female, 2721 NW 38 Terr., Laud. Lakes (DECEASED)

Suspect(s): Courtney Brown, 47, 7/6/55, male, 2721 NW 38 Terr., Laud. Lakes

Description of Incident:

A Lauderdale Lakes man was arrested Tuesday on a Manslaughter charge after investigators determined that his elderly mother died as a result of criminal neglect.

The victim, Eleen Brown, 72, suffered from Diabetes and Alzheimers Disease and had lived with her son, 47-year-old Courtney Brown, at 2721 NW 38 Terrace. On December 12th, the woman was transported to Florida Medical Center after a social worker discovered her in bed at home, filthy and emaciated, in a severe state of malnutrition. Mrs. Brown was later transferred to North Broward Medical Center, where she died on January 5, 2003.

Following an autopsy, the Broward Medical Examiner (Dr. Price) ruled that the death was a homicide and that Mrs. Brown died of skin ulcers and malnutrition due to neglect and starvation.

BSO Homicide detectives determined that Courtney Brown neglected to take his mother to an Alzheimer’s Day Care Center and that he refused to allow home health care aides to enter his home and care for his mother.

Detectives conferred with the State Attorney’s Office and determined that Courtney Brown should be charged with Manslaughter. He was booked at BSO’s main jail on Tuesday and is being held on $10,000 bond.
