Description of Incident:
A pair from Miami-Dade faces numerous charges after being snared by the Broward Sheriff's Office “Operation Scrooge” shortly after 7:30 Wednesday night in Deerfield Beach.
While on patrol as part of the operation, a deputy was approached by the manager of a Comp USA store in the 1800 block of W. Hillsboro Boulevard in Deerfield Beach. The manager told the deputy that a woman, 37-year old Jacqueline Jackson of Miami, had just purchased a large quantity of electronics and was on the store’s “watch list” as a possible scam artist.
The deputy followed Jackson as she pushed a loaded shopping cart to a waiting van driven by 49-year old Tyron Smith of Miami. When the deputy approached the van, he noticed that the vehicle’s ignition had been “punched-out” and that it was being started with a screwdriver.
While questioning the suspects, Broward Sheriff's Office investigators discovered that Jackson and Smith were in possession of more than 20 stolen or counterfeit credit cards, numerous stolen or bogus checks, and several identification cards bearing different names but with the photos of either Smith or Jackson.
Jackson -also known as Evelyne Santiago, Elizabeth Mendez, and Gabriela Roy- is being held on 15-thousand dollars bond and three warrants. She faces 14 charges.
Smith -also known as Luis Tua, Frank Posada, and Abraham Bassie- is out of jail on
10-thousand dollars bond and faces nearly a dozen charges.
“Operation Scrooge” places deputies from the Broward Sheriff's Office in high-traffic shopping centers throughout the county. Deputies keep an eye out for suspicious individuals and help keep businesses and holiday shoppers safe.
