BSO DETECTIVES IDENTIFY CONSTRUCTION WORKER KILLED WHILE WORKING ON I95

Description of Incident:

Broward Sheriff's Office Homicide detectives identified Jose Felix Obando as the construction worker who was killed when he fell into a excavation site on Friday afternoon near the Hallandale Beach southbound on-ramp of Interstate 95. Despite an exhaustive rescue effort involving several agencies the man died at the scene.

The call came in at 1:45 p.m. when workers on the I-95 expansion project noticed the Jose Felix Obando, a co-worker, had fallen into an excavation site approximately 20-23' deep. The two co-workers jumped in and attempted to rescue Obando but were unable to pull him out. Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue and fire rescue departments from the cities of Hollywood, Hallandale Beach and Miramar responded and began a rescue mission. At approximately 4:30 p.m. crews were able to recover the body of the victim. 

BSO homicide and crime scene detectives are investigating. The Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the cause and manner of death. The Occupational Safety & Health Administration is also investigating.
