Description of Incident:
Media exposure of a south Florida senior scam leads to a second suspect being locked up in Broward Sheriff's Office jails and the discovery of many more victims and possible victims.
On the evening of Thursday, February 7, 2002, the Broward Sheriff's Office charged 38-year old Todd Quebe of 6206 NW 66th Ave., Parkland, with taking part in a sinister scheme to swindle area seniors out of thousands of dollars. Investigators started looking at Quebe after the January 30, 2002 arrest of 71-year old Nymah Keyes of 1401 NE 9th St., Apt. 3, Ft. Lauderdale.
According to investigators, Keyes and Quebe have systematically bilked hundreds of thousands of dollars from at least five south Floridians …and there could be many more victims, some of whom may have only talked to the Irish-sounding Quebe on the telephone.
So far, two women and one man from Pompano Beach have told BSO they’ve been ripped-off by Keyes and Quebe. A 61-year old bed-ridden Fort Lauderdale woman who suffers from Multiple Sclerosis has come forward to say she’s been scammed, and an elderly Lighthouse Point woman says she was nicked to the tune of $300,000.00 over three years.
Detectives say the dastardly duo would spin a fantastic tale of how they needed money to fight for the return of millions of dollars seized by the government. The suspected scammers said they were close to victory and that anyone who contributed to the fight would get their money back with sky-high returns. Of course, it was all a lie.
Investigators stress that there is no need to be embarrassed or afraid if you are a victim of these scammers. If Keyes and Quebe ripped you off, call the Broward Sheriff's Office or Crime Stoppers at (954) 493-TIPS.
