Description of Incident:

A 12-year-old boy was air lifted to the hospital in critical condition following a drive-by shooting in Pompano Beach late Sunday afternoon.

Jawon VeShawn Matthews, of Tamarac, was standing outside of his relative’s home, located at 830 N.W. 5 Avenue, when he was shot as he stood in the driveway. Broward
Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to the home after receiving numerous 911 calls, reference shots fired in the area.

Matthews was airlifted to Broward General Medical Center where he underwent surgery.

A BOLO (be-on-the-lookout) was issued for two possible suspect vehicles seen leaving the scene. The shooter is believed to have been in a dark green Corolla or Hyundai, and the second vehicle possibly involved is an older model (1980’s) burgundy Regal.

BSO detectives have not yet determined the identity of the suspect or suspects involved, and the motive remains unclear. However, investigators don’t believe Matthews was the intended target.
