Place of Occurrence: A park near Lauderhill Middle School 1901 NW 49th Ave., Lauderhill

  • Terrance M. Davis, 15, 5406 NW 19th Street, Lauderhill

Description of Incident:

Potential tragedy was averted Thursday when a quick thinking Broward Sheriff's Office School Resource Officer chased and arrested a seventh grader who was armed with a handgun.

At about 5:20 p.m. on May 30, 2002, BSO Deputy Timothy Irvin was supervising an after-school program at Lauderhill Middle School, 1901 NW 49th Avenue in Lauderhill, where he is assigned as the School Resource Officer. Deputy Irvin heard a radio report about gunshots coming from a nearby park and immediately made his way to the sound of the gunfire. That’s when the deputy saw a teenage boy running through a park on the north side of the school, firing a weapon.

Deputy Irvin gave chase while using his radio to call for backup and to advise Lauderhill Police of the situation. Moments later, the shooter, 15-year old Terrance M. Davis of Lauderhill was in custody. A search of the area by Deputy Irvin turned up the pistol that Davis had been firing along with two spent shell casings.

Because of Deputy Irvin’s swift actions, no one was injured.

Davis, a seventh grader at Lauderdale Lakes Middle School, is charged with discharging a firearm in public and improper exhibition of dangerous weapons or firearms, both first-degree misdemeanors. He is also charged with discharging a weapon within 1,000 feet of a
school-sponsored event, a third-degree felony.
