Description of Incident:

Just before 9 a.m., deputies responded to a report of an assault at a construction site at 700 W. Hillsboro Blvd. in Deerfield Beach. A member of a construction crew, later identified as Jonathan Schuler, fatally assaulted a fellow worker, Arcenio Alvarez, with a metal crowbar from the work site. Homicide detectives are trying to discover what led to the seemingly unprovoked attack.

Despite working at the same work site, the two men worked for different companies. It is unknown if they had ever met before. Alvarez was an employee of N&P Demolition, a subcontractor on the site. Schuler was a day laborer who was contracted only for the day.

Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue transported Alvarez to Broward Health North where he died at 9:21 a.m.

Schuler is a resident of Palm Beach County but has two prior arrests in Broward County. In 2006, he was arrested for driving the wrong way on a one-way, failure to display vehicle registration, violation of driver’s license restrictions, resisting arrest without violence, possession of cocaine with intent to sell, possession of MDMA with intent to sell and possession of cannabis. In 2008, he was arrested for violating his probation.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Broward Sheriff’s Office Det. John Curcio at 954-321-4212. If you wish to remain anonymous, contact Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS (8477) or online at browardcrimestoppers.org.
