As part of an on-site re-accreditation assessment, members of the community and BSO employees are invited to offer comments at a public information forum on Monday, August 5, 2002 at 6 p.m. at the Ron Cochran Public Safety Complex, 2601 W. Broward Blvd. in Fort Lauderdale.
Any individual who cannot speak at the public forum but would still like to provide comments to the assessment team may do so by telephone. The public may call an assessor at 954-797-0977 on August 5, 2002 between the hours of 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. or may send written comments by fax at 954-797-0984.
Telephone comments and appearances at the public information session are limited to a few minutes and must address the agency’s ability to comply with standards established by CALEA, the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies. A copy of the standards is available in the BSO Organizational Development and Accreditation Office located at the Ron Cochran Public Safety Building. Persons wishing to offer written comments about the Broward Sheriff’s Office ability to meet the standards for re-accreditation are requested to address any correspondence to the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA), 10306 Eaton Place, Suite 320, Fairfax, VA, 22030-2201 or contact the website at www.CALEA.org
The assessors, all law enforcement practitioners from various out-of-state agencies, will arrive August 3rd and will review written materials, interview individuals and visit offices and other places where compliance can be observed. The assessors are: Chief (Ret.) Richard L. Czech, Midland Police Department, Midland, Texas; Lt. Gregory Whitaker, Charleston Police Department, Charleston, SC; Accreditation Manager Portia Swinson, Georgetown University Department of Public Safety, Washington, DC; and Asst. Bureau Chief Patsy Wilson, Illinois State Police, Springfield, IL.
Once the Commission’s assessors complete their review of this agency, they will report their results to the full commission, which will then decide and notify the agency if it is to retain its accredited status.
Accreditation is for a three-year period, during which time the agency must submit annual reports attesting to continued compliance with those standards under which it was initially accredited. The Broward Sheriff's Office received its initial accreditation in 1999 and is seeking reaccreditation in 2002.
