Description of Incident:

The Broward Sheriff’s Office’s Violence Intervention Proactive Enforcement Response Team (V.I.P.E.R.) is at it again, this time catching daytime burglars targeting snowbirds and spring breakers staying in motels.

V.I.P.E.R. detectives received a tip about two suspects who were scheming to burglarize a motel room at the Motel 6, 825 E. Dania Beach Blvd., where they believed there were weapons inside a safe. Detectives coordinated with the motel’s management so the suspects’ plan would go off without a hitch. The only thing the burglars did not anticipate was that BSO detectives and the SWAT team were keeping watch from the parking lot and the room next door.

Detectives placed inoperable firearms in the safe and jewelry, electronics and currency throughout the room, just as the burglars expected to find. The tip proved to be true, when around 7 p.m. April 2, the pair drove into the motel’s parking lot in a white van. Surveillance video captures Travoynne Martin, 23, and Sharif Earp, 22, wearing hooded sweatshirts, sunglasses and gloves, as they unlawfully enter room 124. The suspects spent less than two minutes ransacking the room before emerging out the door carrying the room’s safe. The SWAT team is seen exiting the room next door and taking them into custody without incident. The burglars had in their possession the laptop, tablet, iPhone, jewelry, currency and weapons (in the safe) that detectives had placed inside the room.

Martin and Earp were booked into the BSO Main Jail, facing charges of armed burglary, grand theft and grand theft of a firearm and are being held with no bond. Earp’s criminal history includes two arrests for strong-armed robbery.  Martin’s criminal history includes five misdemeanor arrests.

The BSO K-9 Unit, the Covert Electronics Surveillance Unit, the Burglary Apprehension Team and Motel 6 management assisted in the success of this operation.
