Description of Incident:

Two women shopping at Publix were targeted by a matronly thief who lifted their wallets from their carts as they shopped. The thief, wearing glasses, a purple and pink, sleeveless, floral top and dark pants, escaped in a small, dark grey car waiting outside.

Broward Sheriff’s Office detectives released surveillance video of one of the thefts. The incident happened just after 2:20 p.m. Aug. 14 at the Publix at 294 Indian Trace in Weston.

The thief, unnoticed by other shoppers, wandered with a cart through the grocery store aisles, pretending to look at items. She got close enough to another shopper’s cart to peek into her open purse and then, as the distracted shopper looked at groceries, the pink-clad criminal reached into the woman’s purse, lifted her wallet and slipped it into her own purse.

Then she quickly turned her cart down an aisle and disappeared from view. Within seconds, the victim noticed her purse was gone. By then, the matronly thief was headed out of the store and into the getaway vehicle.
