Description of Incident:

For 11-year old Cory Johnson and 10-year olds Andre Parks and Ivo Connelly, what started as a day in the park on Wednesday, January 8, 2003 soon turned into what must have seemed like unimaginable riches.

That afternoon, at around 5:00, the boys were playing with a metal detector, searching for buried treasure near the tennis courts at Friedt Park in Lauderdale-By-The-Sea. The machine beeped, alerting the trio to a money clip flush with $613.00 in cold, hard cash lying on the ground in the 4500 block of Bougainvilla Drive.

Divided three ways, each of the boys could have easily pocketed $204.33; enough to keep them in toys and candy for quite some time. But the boys didn’t take the money. Instead, hoping to get the money back in the right hands, they tried to take it to the town hall. However, the town hall was closed. Returning to the tennis courts, the boys saw a Broward Sheriff's Office deputy patrolling the area. They flagged down the deputy and told him about their find.

As the deputy spoke to the kids about the money, 47-year old Enrique Llorente of 1440 South Ocean Boulevard in Lauderdale-By-The-Sea approached them. Llorente told the deputy that he had been at the tennis courts and had lost a considerable amount of money. When he described in detail the unique money clip that held the cash, the deputy happily reunited the man with his money. Before he left, Llorente gave each boy a $20.00 reward for being so honest

At 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday January 14, 2003, the boys will be honored by BSO. During a ceremony at Jarvis Hall, 4501 N. Ocean Drive in Lauderdale-By-The-Sea, Broward Sheriff's Office District-13 Chief Kevin Tyrie will present Cory, Andre, and Ivo with certificates of appreciation for their praiseworthy actions and heroic efforts to break the rule of finders-keepers.
