Description of Incident:

Broward Sheriff's Office detectives are asking for help identifying a purse-snatcher who stalked his victim at a Pompano Beach store then attacked the woman as she was loading her groceries into her car.

At about 10:30 the evening of July 9, 2002, according to investigators, a surveillance camera taped the young thief as he walked through the Publix supermarket at 1140 SW 36th Avenue, then waited by the doors for his prey. Moments later, 40-year old Ivette Diaz walked out of the store and towards her car. As she was putting her purchase into the vehicle, the youthful offender approached, asked Diaz for directions, and then grabbed the woman’s purse from her shoulder and dragged her to the ground.

The purse-snatching punk then ran to a dark colored, two-door car and drove away. A plastic bag over the license plate prevented Diaz from copying the tag. The suspect is a white or Hispanic male, approximately 18 to 25 years old with a slim build, about 5-foot-4, and weighing between 125-145 pounds.

Fortunately, Diaz, of 514 Gardens Drive in Pompano Beach did not appear to be badly injured during the attack.

Crime scene photos of the suspect are attached to this news release, posted on the Broward Sheriff’s Office website: www.sheriff.org and Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $1,000.00 for information leading to the arrest of this crook.
