Description of Incident:

Broward Sheriff’s Office robbery detectives, with assistance from the Fort Lauderdale Police Department, have made an arrest in connection with this morning’s attempted murder of a Pompano Beach dive shop manager during an armed robbery.

Shortly after 10:30 a.m., Monday, November 25, 2002, 23 year-old Jeff Adams entered the Force E dive shop, located at 2700 E. Atlantic Blvd. in Pompano Beach. In an attempt to pass himself off as a regular customer, Adams spent several minutes making his way through the shop’s aisles. He made inquiries to the store’s manager, Gary Thomas, about several items and even tried on a wetsuit. Once at the checkout counter, Adams asked Thomas to see a dive knife inside a glass display case. When Thomas turned his back to restock the wetsuit, Adams stabbed Thomas once in the back. The robbery attempt was thwarted when Adams noticed two witnesses outside the shop’s window. He then fled in a stolen 1987 white Nissan 200SX which was parked outside the shop. The injured victim was able to stumble to the shop’s door in time to catch a glimpse of Adam’s get-away-car and its tag. Thomas was transported to North Broward Hospital where he is expected to make a full recovery.

According to investigators, this morning, Adams stole the Nissan 200SX from a friend who filed a report with the Fort Lauderdale Police Department. Officers with that agency assisted BSO by staking out the Tropic Cay Motel where Adams was staying and were able to make an arrest.

Adams has been turned over to BSO custody and will be charged with attempted murder and armed robbery.
