Description of Incident:

A construction worker was killed when he fell into an excavation site and it caved in burying him in dirt and gravel  on Friday afternoon near the Hallandale Beach southbound on-ramp of Interstate 95. Despite an exhaustive rescue effort involving several agencies the man died at the scene.

The call came in at 1:45 p.m. when workers on the I-95 expansion project noticed the victim, a co-worker, had fallen into an excavation site approximately 20-23' deep. The two co-workers jumped in and attempted to rescue the victim but were unable to pull him out. Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue and fire rescue departments from the cities of Hollywood, Hallandale Beach and Miramar responded and began a rescue mission. At approximately 4:30 p.m. crews were able to recover the body of the victim. His identity is being withheld pending a next of kin notification.

BSO homicide and crime scene detectives are investigating. The Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the cause and manner of death. The Occupational Safety & Health Administration is also investigating.
