Description of Incident:
Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a bogus call of a bomb left at the Florida Power and Light plant in Port Everglades on Friday night. Investigators were able to find the source of the call and are now asking for the public’s help in identifying the suspect.
At 7:45 p.m. on June 27, a caller, who identified himself as John Doe, reported that he had placed a bomb in a backpack and left it at the FPL plant at 1400 Eller Drive, inside Port Everglades. BSO Fire Rescue, SID, SWAT and the Bomb Squad responded to the scene. U.S. Customs and Border Protection assisted BSO in securing the area. Roadways around the FPL site were closed while the Bomb Squad and SWAT searched the premises. BSO helicopters conducted flyovers, but no device was found.
BSO Violent Crimes investigators were able to determine the call had come from a pay phone at a BP located at 606 N. Federal Highway in Fort Lauderdale. Surveillance video from the gas station shows the suspect as he drove up in a white 2002-2005 Ford Focus hatchback. Clear video of the suspect show him as he went into the convenience store and requested change for a dollar to place the 911 call.
Anyone with information is asked to contact BSO Detective Luis Rivera at 954-321-4289 or Broward Crime Stoppers, anonymously, at 954-493-TIPS (8477) or www.browardcrimestoppers.org. Crime Stoppers will pay up to $3,000 for information that leads to an arrest.
