Detectives are searching for at least three men, two of whom were captured by security cameras in an elaborate rouse to steal an expensive forklift. Luckily, a savvy employee stopped them in their tracks.

At 5:50 p.m. May 19, surveillance cameras recorded a man wearing a reflective work vest getting out of the passenger-side of an 18-wheeler. The large rig then pulled away and a large tow truck with its logos covered over with black tape appeared. The man stepped into the tow truck and he and the driver pull up to Crawford Tract Corp at 3301 S.W. 11th Drive in Deerfield Beach.

The thief presented employees at the company fake documents meant to prove that he and his “co-worker” were supposed to take the forklift away. They then began to hook up a forklift, valued at $10,000, to the tow truck.

A vigilant employee realized something wasn’t adding up and went outside to question the men. One of the men walked up to the employees and presented the document again, possibly to distract him as the other thief quickly dumped the forklift off the truck. Both men quickly jumped back into the tow truck and hastily sped away.

The men are described as Hispanic. One of them is heavy-set and wore khaki pants, a white shirt and a white hardhat. The second thief has a medium frame and wore khaki shorts, long-sleeve orange shirt and a white hardhat. Security video also captured a red station wagon suspiciously parked in the area during the crime that detectives believe may be involved.

Anyone with information is asked to contact BSO Detective Scott Whittom at 954-480-4285. If you wish to remain anonymous, contact Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS (8477) or online at Anonymous tips that lead to an arrest are eligible for a reward of up to $3,000.
