Description of Incident:
Broward Sheriff's Office Homicide detectives have determined that a Broward County Jail inmate committed suicide last week when he died of blunt head trauma following an 18-foot plunge.
Detectives obtained witness statements from 15 other inmates – roughly half of the inmates in that section of the jail – where Gary Kane took his own life. According to the witnesses, Kane walked upstairs to a second-floor level, carrying a blanket. He began to tie the blanket around his neck, but couldn’t knot it. He then climbed to the top of the metal rail, lost his balance and fell backward onto the landing. Kane immediately climbed up on the rail again, placed his hands behind his back and dove headfirst onto the concrete floor below, making no attempt to break his fall.
Deputies and medical staff responded immediately and Kane was transported to Broward General Medical Center where he was declared dead at 11:39 a.m.
There were no other inmates near Kane when he dove off the railing. Detective Ray Carmody contacted Kane’s family in New Jersey and informed them that he had died in a witnessed suicide.
BSO deputies in Deerfield Beach arrested Kane on August 29th for Possession of a Stun Gun by a Convicted Felon. Released from state prison a year ago, he had been arrested in Broward County five times in the past decade on charges including Burglary of an Occupied Dwelling, Burglary of an Unoccupied Dwelling, Grand Theft, Theft, Theft to Deprive, Carrying a Concealed Weapon, Trafficking in Controlled Substances, Possession of Controlled Substance, Possession of Drug paraphernalia, and Violation of Parole.
