Broward Sheriff’s Office homicide detectives are investigating the circumstances that led to a shooting Tuesday afternoon that left one teenager dead and another lucky to be alive.

Shortly before 4 p.m., two 17-year-old boys - Cornelius Mitchell and a friend - were walking east on 44th Street near State Road 7 in Lauderdale Lakes. Elijah Ellington was walking west. Something sparked a dispute among the three. Ellington pulled out a handgun and opened fire on the teens, then remained on scene until deputies arrived.

Mitchell was gravely injured. Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue transported him by air to Broward Health Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.  The second teen was only grazed by a bullet.  He was treated at the hospital and released.

Ellington was booked into the BSO Main Jail charged with felony murder and attempted felony murder.
