Description of Incident:

Broward Sheriff’s Office homicide detectives are investigating the senseless murder of a Pompano Beach man, shot to death late Tuesday night during the armed robbery of his family’s convenience store.

According to investigators, shortly before 10:30 p.m. on Tuesday, December 3, 2002, two gunmen entered the Right Way Food Store at 13 SE 11th Avenue in Pompano Beach with the intention of robbing the business.
Working at the family store at the time were relatives, 50-year old Abed Damiati and 48-year old Hammad Mourtada.

For an unknown reason, one of the gunmen shot and killed Mr. Damiati. Mr. Mourtada retrieved his own weapon and returned fire, striking both of the robbers. The crooks left the store, jumped into a vehicle and fled the scene.

Mr. Damiati, of 333 SE 11th Avenue in Pompano Beach, died at the scene. Mr. Mourtada of 9197 Ramblewood Drive in Coral Springs was not injured.

The Broward Sheriff’s Office notified deputies and other local law enforcement officers to be on the lookout for the robber’s vehicle and within an hour, Boca Raton Police located it near an apartment building at 875 SW 4th Court in Boca Raton. Officers were then able to locate the alleged robbers inside the apartment building.
Both suspected robbers were taken to an area hospital where one was treated and released and the other underwent surgery.

Detectives continue with their investigation to determine any possible involvement of the suspects in this case.

No charges are planned against Mr. Mourtada.
