Description of Incident:
Broward Sheriff’s Office traffic homicide detectives are investigating a chain-reaction crash involving six vehicles Thursday night in Oakland Park that left one man dead and four people injured.
They believe it may have started when a 68-year-old driver had a medical problem and passed out at the wheel of his Ford Explorer as he travelled westbound on Oakland Park Boulevard. The Explorer went over the median and into oncoming traffic, side-swiping a Honda CRV and then hitting a Volkswagen Jetta head-on. The Explorer then collided with a PT Cruiser, which then hit a Toyota Corolla. A GMC Sierra then rear-ended the Jetta.
Oakland Park Fire Rescue and Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue responded to the scene. The passenger in the back seat of the Jetta was killed, and the driver and front-seat passenger were transported to Broward Health Medical Center with injuries. The driver of the Explorer was transported to Broward Health Medical Center, as well. The driver of the PT Cruiser was transported to Florida Medical Center with injuries. No one in the CRV or the Corolla was injured.
