HABITUAL BURGLAR LED AUTHORITIES ON DANGEROUS PURSUIT ACROSS TWO COUNTIES

Description of Incident:
A burglar caught stealing several hundred dollars worth of tools, led authorities on a chase into a neighboring county. Broward Sheriff's Office deputies pursued the man until he entered Miami-Dade, where he was apprehended by Miami Dade Police.
Just before 6 p.m. on January 28, Guillermo Alvarez-Mendez, 47, was spotted stealing tools from a van parked in the Home Depot parking lot at 1951 S. St. Rd. 7 in West Park. The suspect fled the scene driving a vehicle that was reported stolen in Miami. BSO West Park deputies followed the suspect south on I-95. BSO coordinated with law enforcement in Miami-Dade which took over the pursuit as the suspect reached their jurisdiction.
Alvarez-Mendez was taken into custody at approximately 6:40 p.m. near the 1500 block of Southwest Second Street by Miami Dade Police. The stolen items were recovered from the stolen car. He is charged with burglary conveyance, grand theft, grand theft auto, felony hit and run, resisting arrest and may be facing additional charges.
Alvarez-Mendez is a violent career offender with numerous arrests mostly relating to burglary.
