Description of Incident:
The Broward Sheriff’s Office is investigating a potentially deadly prank at Pompano Beach Middle School that was perhaps pulled-off by a couple of students.
At about 7:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 31, 2002, a strong odor of gas was detected inside the science wing of the school. The odor was traced to room 413 of Building-1.
Although there were no classes in session at the time, officials immediately evacuated any children on campus to a safe area far away from any potential danger while the source of the gas was located and the leak capped.
At about 6:30 the same morning, according to the BSO School Resource Officer at the school, the principal at the school had seen two youths jumping a fence in an area not far from a large propane tank at the southwest corner of Building-1. Early investigation by the Broward Sheriff's Office indicates that two of four valves on the propane tank had been turned to the ‘on’ position, allowing the highly flammable gas to run into the classroom.
By 9:00 a.m., students were allowed back into the school and classes were in session. The science wing, however, remained closed while safety officials continued to ventilate the area.
While no one was reported injured, this was nonetheless a very hazardous situation and the Broward Sheriff's Office is investigating it as a criminal matter. Anyone with information on this case may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000.00 for anonymous information phoned into Crime Stoppers at (954) 493-TIPS..
