Description of Incident:

Broward Sheriff’s Office homicide detectives are investigating the apparent suicide of an inmate who hung himself Saturday at the Main Jail in downtown Fort Lauderdale.

Another inmate saw Christopher Burner hanging from a bed sheet in his cell at approximately 1:10 p.m. and immediately notified a detention deputy. Jail medical personnel and Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue responded to the cell on the fourth floor and transported Burner to Broward Health Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at about 1:57 p.m.

During a court hearing Friday, December 14, a judge revoked Burner’s bail, and he was remanded to custody. Burner was being held without bond on one count of felony battery by strangulation and two counts of battery.

The Broward Medical Examiner’s Office will perform an autopsy to officially determine the cause and manner of death.

Per BSO policy, investigators from the Homicide Unit, Crime Scene Unit and Internal Affairs responded to the scene. This case remains under investigation.
