Description of Incident:

Broward Sheriff's Office Robbery detectives are asking for help tracking down a crook known as The Bucs Fan Bandit. He hit a south Florida bank that has been the target of robbery twice in less than a month.

Wearing sunglasses and a Tampa Bay Buccaneers football cap, the unidentified man walked into the Suntrust Bank at 221 East Commercial Boulevard in Lauderdale-By-The-Sea at about 3:30 the afternoon of Monday, September 9, 2002. He placed a robbery note in front of the teller and clearly told the woman that he wanted money.

Another bank employee, sensing the robbery, walked up to the criminal, grabbed the crook’s cap and sunglasses, knocking the items to the floor, and told the man to leave the bank. The felon snatched an undetermined amount of cash and ran off, leaving his cap, sunglasses, and robbery note behind.

In an apparently unrelated crime, a man now in custody, robbed the same Suntrust branch on August 21st. Hallandale Beach police arrested that robber, identified as 32-year old Bryan W. Smith of Knoxville, Tennessee, as he tried to rob a bank in that city on August 24th. Smith admitted to the August 21st bank robbery and the robbery of a Deerfield Beach drug store on July 18th. Smith also has bank robbery warrants out of North Carolina and Tennessee. He has since been transferred out of the Broward Sheriff's Office Main Jail to the custody of federal authorities.

Photos of the Bucs Fan Bandit and Bryan W. Smith are attached to this news release, posted on the Broward Sheriff’s Office website: www.sheriff.org. Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $1,000.00 for information leading to the arrest of The Bucs Fan Bandit. Anyone with information on this crime should call (954) 493-TIPS.
