Description of Incident:

Broward Sheriff’s Office detectives arrested a 14-year-old boy Monday for robbing a mail carrier at gunpoint in September. The teen, who had 10 outstanding warrants and was on probation, was charged with armed robbery.

Detectives say he wore a mask from the movie “Scream” and carried a black handgun when he confronted the uniformed mail carrier in the area of 901 N.E. 12 Ave. in Pompano Beach as he delivered mail. He pointed the gun at him and demanded his keys. The mailman, 52-year-old Glenn Girard, complied, handing him the key to his postal truck, but the boy kept pointing the gun at his face. Girard pushed the handgun away from him, and the two wrestled. Then the teen ran away, dropping the key and the mask in the process. Girard was left with scrapes and bruises on his knees.

BSO and the U.S. Postal Inspector began an investigation. After local media outlets covered the story, detectives received an anonymous Crime Stoppers tip naming the juvenile. He later confessed his involvement to detectives. The juvenile’s warrants were mostly for burglary and grand theft.

The teen was arrested Monday and transported to the Juvenile Assessment Center and then to the Juvenile Detention Center.
