Description of Incident:

The armed suspect, shot and killed Monday night in Pompano Beach, has been positively identified and his next of kin have been notified of his death. He was Kenneth Shewey, 53, of Pompano Beach.

At 6:22 p.m. (2/13/12) Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to several 911 calls from residents regarding a disturbance at a two-story apartment building at 811 SE 22 Avenue. Shewey had pointed his .45 caliber handgun at his ex-girlfriend’s head. Upon arrival, deputies saw Shewey, still armed with the semiautomatic pistol and standing outside a second floor apartment. Shewey fired one round into the air, striking no one. Deputies ordered Shewey to drop his gun. Instead of complying and dropping the gun, Shewey started walking down an outside stairway, still holding the weapon in his hand. BSO Sergeant Noel Mercado fired, striking Shewey and killing him.

Pompano Beach Fire Rescue paramedics pronounced Shewey dead. No deputies or citizens were hurt.

Per standard procedure in all deputy-involved shootings, the Broward Sheriff’s Office Homicide Unit, Crime Scene Unit and Internal Affairs Division are investigating with assistance from BSO’s Pompano Beach District. Sgt. Mercado was placed on administrative leave per standard procedure.
